Oilfield Technology - September 2016 - page 45

T
he drivewithin the oil and gas industry to produce hydrocarbons
from layered formations such as laminated shales and interbedded
lithologies has led to a sharp rise in the number of wells requiring
multi-level hydraulic stimulation.
However, the recent decline in oil price hasmeant that the enthusiasm
to exploit such formations has beenmatched by an ever-greater focus on
technologies that can bothmaximise production and allowoperators to
continue to generate profit in a lowcommodity price environment.
A number of systems and technologies have been developed by
the industry to enable cost-effective hydrocarbon production in the sub
US$50world. A growing trend has been the concentration on increasing
the number of production zoneswithin awell tomaximise contact with
the reservoir. However, an increase in the number of production zones
can bringwith it greater challenges in terms of systemperformance and
reliability, especially relating to effective zonal opening and isolation.
In answer to these challenges, Tendeka has developed a
comprehensive and integrated heel-to-toe hydraulic fracturing system,
incorporating an innovative hanger, packers and ball activated sleeves, for
selectivemultizone stimulation in open hole or cased hole applications.
The company’s FracRight™ system, which has been deployed in
several locations including the Bakken, NorthDakota, provides operators
with a cost-effectivemulti-phase fracturing option.
Multi-phase fracking
The key requirements of any successful multi-phase frack job are effective
zonal isolation and the enabling of high-rate pumping. The design of
Tendeka’s systemenables reliable setting at high angles, the sealing of
swell packers in oil andwater withoutmoving parts, the elimination of
premature shear and unplanned setting and the establishment of a large
flowarea.
