Page Background

The Terraformopenhole packer series has been combined

with a new generation of shunt tube based screens systems and

a generation IVWFXO gravel pack system to deliver cased hole

functionality. Since its introduction the industry has collectively

saved over US$2 billion in well construction costs and achieved

production and injectivity gains from this openhole completion

technology. It has been used in the Far East, Africa, the North Sea

and the Gulf of Mexico.

The company has also developed fibre optic data systems for

onshore and offshore use that can be combined with downhole

flowmetering, remote flowmetering topside and analytic

capability to capture valuable information froma large quantity of

data points. The information can then be used tomake real time

decisions and take real time action through an automation system

based around Centro and Foresite Edge.

In the fields of completions, liners, cementation,

tubular running, fishing, and wellbore clean up, the company

has focused on improving personnel safety by reducing crew

numbers offshore by up to as much as a half. As a result,

benefits have included a 30% improvement in run time, a

shrinking carbon footprint and cost savings for the operator and

Weatherford alike.

Welltec

In this challenging oil price environment, the focus remains on

improving the efficiency and the value of assets. Welltec’s range

of completions products are designed and engineered to enhance

production through the life of the well – fromearly planning,

design, and construction to zonal isolation and completion.

To isolate unwanted water or gas inflow and

compartmentalise the reservoir it is highly advantageous to

design a well with reliable isolation between the lower completion

and openhole without a reliance on cement.

TheWelltec annual barrier (WAB®) for openhole zonal isolation,

alongwith variations of thismetal-expandable barrier technology,

facilitates the ability to deploy ‘cementless’ extended reach,

multi-zone, horizontal, lower completions. It provides on-demand,

high pressure zonal isolation across varying borehole geometries

unaffected by thermal changes in thewellbore. The technology can

be used for zonal isolationwithin the reservoir or between adjacent

zones, water/gas isolation, high pressure openhole isolation for

stimulation, and in openhole, cased hole and hostile environments.

Casestudy

A client in the Middle East desired zonal isolation within a

horizontal well with an openhole completion, due to historic

issues with cemented liners. The client wanted to selectively

divide the reservoir into six compartments, separated by WABs,

and equip each zone with remotely-operated, inflow control

devices to balance production.

The client’s liner was deployed successfully to 16 539 ft TD in

total loss conditions. The barriers were successfully expanded and

set using calculated volume based on the total loss environment.

Zonal isolation was achieved and the client was able to produce

the zones using the inflow control devices within each isolated

compartment.
