perators and contractors are constantly
striving to achieve the best possible
safety levels on the drill floor. Correctly
designed equipment significantly enhances
the safety of rig operations. Ideally, personnel
should not be physically present in the area
of the rig they are responsible for when their
safety is potentially at stake, as crews can
become less focused during routine operations.
Keeping people fully out of harm’s way during
such operations has a major impact on rig
development. Typically, reversed engineering
is used to improve the working environment
on an existing rig set-up through the addition
of equipment or procedures; however, there is
now an opportunity to take the operations as a
starting point and build a safe set of equipment
around them.

how the aim of fully automated
handling operations on the drill
floor is being realised.
